Nationally Known Artist Workshops

Nationally Known Artist Workshops

Twice a year, Latrobe Art Center invites a Nationally Known Artist to travel to Latrobe for a three to five day workshop to teach a variety of techniques to local artists and art enthusiasts. Anywhere from 10 to 20 students fill the gallery for these workshops. Artists attending the workshops have traveled from Florida, Massachusetts, Maryland, New York, Ohio, and West Virginia. In addition, four students from Greater Latrobe Senior High School are chosen to attend the workshop under a generous scholarship.

Each year Latrobe Art Center strives to provide exciting and stimulating workshops taught by nationally known artists from across the United States. In the past we have hosted Frank Francese of Colorado; Janet Rogers of Florida; Margaret M. Martin of New York; Fred Graff of Ohio; Don Andrews, Jean Uhl Spicer, and Joyce Werwie Perry all of Pittsburgh, and many more! Latrobe Art Center is honored to have such prestigious artists share their wealth of information and experience with our local artists.

Please consider broadening your creative talents by attending one of our future workshops.

About the Workshop

Lessons in Realistic Watercolor: Still Life

In this workshop, we will paint a modest still life from start to finish, and you will learn my entire painting process as I work through a fully rendered painting. Participants will learn about various techniques for painting realism, which apply to many types of subject matter. The focus will be on understanding value and color, mixing rich blacks, establishing form, and creating texture. Students will have access to my full materials list, reference material, and sample drawing. The goal is to learn a lot and enjoy the journey.

If you love detail and methodical painting, but have struggled to paint realism with watercolor, this class is for you!

Artist Statement

The subject matter of my figure and still life paintings communicate my deep love and respect for nature and life. Some paintings stem from a joy or narrative that is from my own experiences. Other pieces reflect the simple beauty I find in everyday objects composed together. I have focused on developing my craft to capture the beauty of what surrounds me with precision and clarity; and strive to convey that to all people through the universal language of representational art. It is my desire that when others see my work they may be inspired by the perceptible signs of the real Creator.
